The modern house was built for a single-family house. It was designed for a lush natural setting a new subdivision in the mountains above Kyoto. The site inclined away to the north. It oriented onto a National Park, with a view across a forest toward Mt Hiei (the most sacred mountain in Japanese Buddhism). In compliance with new building regulations that mandate orthogonal walls and gabled roofs, the house got the form of a nagaya (traditional row house): a linear sequence of rooms contained in a long, narrow volume aligned perpendicular to the street. The house extended in section. The slope was followed: single-story at the street façade. It extended to two stories at the rear of the site. The gabled roof shape was allowed to define the interior spaces rather than simply sit on top of them. The bedrooms were half hidden, whereas the living area was faced toward the mountains. The historical nagaya type was a response to the narrow, with little or no space between buildings, but in this semi-rural location the lot was shared in half longitudinally, with building and garden set parallel and having approximately the same width and footprint. The rooms were set as a band running along the western edge of the site. The natural light enabled penetration into each room. The location of the building offered maximum separation from the neighbor to the east, and maximum sunlight in the garden area. The overall nagaya form kept as abstract as possible, made entirely from bare concrete. The roof had no covering or surface membrane (an invisible waterproofing compound has been applied to the exposed slab). There were no projecting eaves. The house volume akin was made to something sliced from a block of tofu. It had no drains, downspouts, or gutters. The entire roof plane had been subtly formed to become an enormous rainwater channel. The roof perimeter inclined gently upwards. The subtle parapets that prevented water from falling down the long walls were created.

Kyoto firm Thomas Daniell Studio created this concrete house in Hiedaira, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese house was situated next door to the house and studio where published on Dezeen last week. The entire building was made from exposed reinforced concrete. It enclosed the gabled roof, which had been treated to make it waterproof. Built on a sloping piece of land, the house design had a single storey at the front. It extended into two stories at the rear. Large windows in the bedroom and living room offered views of the surrounding landscape, which enclosed a national park.
