A planning for moving and reopening an internal clinic was located in a shopping mall on the outskirts of Hiroshima. There was a high ceiling in the shopping mall and, therefore, the clinic occupied space within it.

The clinic’s surrounding corridors were crowded with shoppers. The client asked to make good use of the high ceiling. However, keeping the open space, the risk of heating/cooling and ventilation problems was increased. So the ceiling was inclined to intonate the height. The volume of the room was controlled. Furthermore, all the walls were made with the same height. The space in between the walls and the ceiling was created like a partition style. The ceiling was showed as “a big roof” spanning all rooms. The space depth, brightness and a comfortable feeling was provided. In considering the privacy of people coming into the clinic, each room was arranged to allow in light, without closing the façade, but yet in such a way to stop the direct view of outsiders. In total, the interior design seemed a wooden Kura (a traditional Japanese storehouse), but this magnanimous space provided people to rest and comfort.

The clinic interior was completed by Japanese architect Hayato Komatsu. It was located within a shopping centre, in Hiroshima, Japan. Because of the height of the original space, the clinic design was putted a gabled ceiling to create a more intimate atmosphere. The walls of the treatment rooms were left slightly shorter. A feature of the sloping ceiling was made. The interior walls and ceiling were covered in strips of wood with an array of fluorescent tube lights on the sloping planes. The clinic’s storefront façade served passer-by’s with clear views into the clinic. The treatment rooms were positioned at the rear of the space, carefully partitioned to prevent any direct views into them.
