Matilde House is located in Rathgar, South Dublin, Ireland. It was formerly a two-storey house building that needed to be expanded for the client’s growing family. New bathroom, bedroom, and space for working was required just now, whereas the existing space would not be able to accommodate the new rooms. Ailtireacht Architects had renovated the house design by expanding the Victorian terrace, connecting the lower ground floor garden and the piano nobile with a new staircase, and adding a new canopy to create a dining room on the existed side passage.

This contemporary house was constructed by combining light-grey zinc, glass and wood. The material is chosen in response to the existing condition of unpainted render at the rear terrace and the subordinate functional spaces contained therein. Victorian tradition was implemented through the creation of a series of multifunctional spaces, accommodating the contemporary needs such as spaces for working, playing, bathing and sleeping.
