The UNStudio renovated the interior design of an existing loft space located in Greenwich Village in Manhattan, New York.

This renovation dedicated to an art collector aimed to create an interior design that merge life and art; where the client could live comfortably while interacting with the many paintings, art objects, and books. Curved walls made of fiberglass reinforced with gypsum panels were introduced to virtually divide the main space of the loft that was long, wide, and rather low; into proportionally balanced spaces.

These meander walls, which were used to hang art and display books, together with such an articulated ceiling created hybrid condition in which exhibition areas merged into living areas.

A floating exhibition wall blended into library shelves on one side and into a display case on the other side.

The ceiling consisted of the opaque part and the luminous part. The opaque part consisted of subtly arched elements that impress an unlimited ceiling which disguised the real height of the space

The luminous part was backlit by 18.000 LED lights that could be programmed to various shades of lights. This part balanced the proportions of the loft by creating an illusion of height. It also functioned as space divider. By interchanging between luminous and opaque, the ceiling becomes a field of ambient and local lighting conditions.

Next element to beautify the apartment interior was ceiling-height glass panes to maximize views across downtown Manhattan; and the last one was douglas-fir floor with 1½ feet wide planks covers the entire loft that unified the space and allowed furniture and art to be positioned as floating elements.
